I blinked away from Talia, trying to focus on what Mikhail was saying. His accent sped up his Russian, and I had to ignore the gorgeous distraction by the bar and keep up.

“It’s Staten Island,” he said in his native tongue. “I can find a place further away if you want, but if she’s already from out of town, it might be safer to keep her in New York.”

“Yeah.” My jaw clenched at the hit of reality. “I agree. That’s far away enough.”

“It’s a decent neighborhood, and Polina’s found her a job at her sister’s catering company. Mainly waitressing and bartending. She can start whenever, and no one will pry into her background.”

So it was all planned. I’d done my part and Mikhail had done his. Talia’s new life was ready for her to live. A home. A job. Freedom. That’s all she’d ever wanted and now it was hers.

But Staten Island was too far away. The apartment next door to mine would be too far away, because if Talia left me, I knew that would be it. I’d never see her again. I couldn’t. I’d make sure of it. It was safer and smarter to cut the tie completely. That was the plan from day one.

This girl had bled with me. She was in my head, my gut, my chest. We were bound to one another in the darkest of ways, but still she was my peace. Talia was my sanctuary. My paper lifeboat. Oxygen itself.

Mikhail furrowed his brow, seeing the tension on my face. “If you’re worried about her, the wife and I can check in on her from time to time. We’ll make sure she’s safe and well.”

I watched her at the bar, drinking champagne with my father and brothers. She looked tiny compared to them. I had no doubt the nerves were eating away under that blue dress, but she was still smiling with them and toasting to a couple she didn’t even know.

“She’s brave,” I said aloud without thinking.

Mikhail smiled. “Most women on the run are.”

Talia’s whole life had changed since she entered my world. She accepted it and trusted me. She even put on a dress and charmed my family just to make my life easier.

She wasn’t just brave. She was tough as fuck.

How could I walk away from that? From a woman strong enough to step into my world? If she had the balls to walk with me then I had to find them from somewhere too, because the mere idea of leaving her was ripping my insides to pieces.

Letting Talia go would kill me.

I turned to Mikhail with a serious brow. “Let’s put this on hold for the time being.”

Mikhail looked confused but didn’t argue. “If that’s what you want.”

I gave him a firm nod. “She’s safe with me. She’s happy. That’s good enough for now.”

“Then we’ll put this on hold. You have my number should you change your mind.”
